CGLA To Host Statewide Winter Classic Robotics Tournament
The Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy is thrilled to host the Winter Classic VEX V5 Robotics Competition this month on Jan. 31. Over 24 middle and high school teams across the state will travel to the Hutton Gymnasium to take part in the tournament. Each year, VEX Robotics releases a new game that allows teams to design, build and program a robot to score the most points. The objective of this year's game, Push Back, is to obtain a higher score than the opponent by scoring blocks in goals, controlling zones within goals, and parking in defined zones at the end of the match. Eighth-grade students Jessica Francisco Tomas and TaTyanna Carr are entering their third season on CGLA Team 547B. Last year, they were joined by Jersey Ringer and Laura Dennis. “547B is a team of leaders,” said Cristol Kapp, robotics leader and STEM Coordinator. “They met together over the summer in June to plan for the upcoming season, and that work is paying off.” Team 547 B has also competed in the Conversant Local League, the STEM School's Pumpikin Spice Tournament, and the North Georgia Vex V5 Tournament.“A strong robotics program is a signifier of a successful STEM school,” said Brooke Flatford, 7th Grade ELA teacher. “I return to volunteer each year because I love watching this program grow and thrive, and, of course, I enjoy seeing some of our brightest students work together in creative ways.”The VEX robotics competition is sponsored by the Robotics Education Foundation.CGLA Robotics Awards:547B-2024 Chattanooga Area Local League, Judges Award, 2024 CGLA Winter Classic Judges Award and Sportsmanship Award, 2025 CGLA Winter Classic Judges AwardCGLA’s Mission: We provide girls and young women with a rigorous college preparatory education focused on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math in a supportive environment that nurtures self-confidence, inspires leadership, encourages critical thinking, and promotes academic excellence.
