A message from our counselors
The Guidance and College & Career Counseling office at CGLA supports students in a variety of ways. Our aim is to address and assist students with academic, personal, and emotional needs to help them achieve their highest levels of success.
We embrace working with students of varying ages and strive to be a welcoming and valuable resource for students and their families along their journey as CGLA Mustangs and beyond. Our objective is to equip our students with the tools necessary to manage their own social/emotional health and college & career readiness.
Services Provided
We offer a comprehensive program that supports the school’s mission. In our approach to meeting the state of Tennessee Department of Education school counseling and career guidance standards, our counselors help coordinate programs and initiatives such as orientation for new students, various mentoring programs, college and career fairs, transition to high school and college, scholarship opportunities and resume/portfolio building for college and career. In addition, we also serve as the school testing administrators for all standardized assessments. We are available to consult with parents and teachers to learn more about how we can enhance student success and provide optimal levels of support.
College & Career Counseling
The transition from high school to college or career is a major step in our students' lives. We are here to help them navigate through the many options presented and make a choice that best fits their need and will, ultimately, help them reach their goals. Our services allow us to help students with:
Career Exploration
Interest Inventory
Tennessee Promise Requirements
Individual Counseling
Students are able to schedule confidential, solution-focused counseling sessions to address academic, personal, and career concerns. While parents and teachers may refer students to our office, students also have access to referral forms to schedule their own appointments. These sessions consist of listening, analysis and providing tools to help students identify their own personal strengths as well as opportunities for improvement. We focus on making good decisions, setting attainable goals, overcoming obstacles, and coping with challenges.
Small Group Counseling
We are currently working to create needs assessments for small groups in areas such as study skills, friendship, stress/anxiety, college/career, and family situations. Parents, teachers, and students should speak to a counselor to inquire about available groups.
Response to Intervention (RTI) Referrals
If a student is having difficulty succeeding in the classroom, the first thing to do is contact her teacher. It may be helpful to schedule a time to conference with them to discuss concerns and talk about ways to address the problem.
In addition to the services above, we also offer academic counseling and college& career counseling.
